What is a "Drip Detector"?

A drip detector is an electronic flow monitor. Two electronic "eyes" look for drops falling in a clear capsule (often seen in movies or on TV in hospital scenes). This enables the electronics of the pump to know that liquid is flowing, and the pump will continue to run. After selling these pumps for over 2 years, I can honestly say that 95% of all aquarist problem calls directly relate to the operation of the drip detector and the annoying alarm that goes off when the drip detector goes off. For peace of mind, ease of use, economy and trouble-free dosing, a disabled drip detector system is by far the best way to go. Unfortunately, this is economically possible only with selected types of pumps.

Pump Situation
With
Drip Detector Disabled
With
Drip Detector Untouched
Dosing clear kalkwasser or make-up water
Never any problem
Runs fine until "capsule" gets cloudy (often months). Then no-flow alarms.
Capsule then needs to be cleaned with vinegar or acid.
Dosing cloudy kalkwasser
Never any problem- possible shorter tubing life
due to abrasiveness of kalk powder
Rapid clouding of "capsule". Alarm starts going off.
Dosing B-Ionic
Enables use of low-flow tubing. as low as .3 mL/hr.
1mL/hour minimum flow (24 mL/day). Might need dilution.
Dosing algae slurries
Never any problem
Obscured capsule will give no-flow errors
Cloudy Capsule causes flow errors
Never any problem - there is NO capsule
Costs $5 to $7 ea. plus shipping
Priming of pump when changing liquids
Unnecessary - pump is naturally self-priming
Must be primed or "no-flow" errors occur
